A Guide to Proper Pocket Watch Maintenance

Pocket watches are a popular collector’s item among antique enthusiasts, especially if they’re still in working condition. Whether you’ve just purchased one for yourself, received one as a gift, or had one passed down as a family heirloom, it’s important to know how to keep it in good shape. While this isn’t costly or difficult, routine care and attention is necessary, as with any mechanical device. Here are a few tips that will help ensure your treasured timepiece lasts for generations.

How to Care for Your Pocket Watch

Wind It Often

The mechanics of a pocket watch require them to be wound every day to keep accurate time. This should be done carefully so as not to overwind your timepiece, which can damage the internal components. Once fully wound, you’ll be able to feel resistance from the mainspring. Never force the stem to continue turning after reaching this point.

Use the Right Cleaning Materials & Techniques

When cleaning your pocket watch, gently wipe it down with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dirt and debris. This material is soft and won’t leave scratches behind. Also, avoid using any chemical cleaners or water since these can harm the metal surface, enamel dial, or delicate mechanics. Keep in mind you don’t want to polish your timepiece too much, particularly if it’s engraved, because doing so can erode the detailed workmanship over time.

Be Cautious With the Case

Pocket watch cases provide a protective layer for the timepiece. However, these are typically delicate and must be handled with extra care. Make sure not to force the lid open or open it further than it’s designed to be. This could damage the hinge or spring alignment and prevent the case from closing correctly.

Limit Exposure to the Elements

Moisture and humidity can cause rust or corrosion to develop on the various parts of your pocket watch. As such, it’s essential to limit exposure to these elements and store your timepiece in a dry, well-ventilated space when not being used. When carrying a pocket watch, be sure the dial is facing inwards to protect the crystal, and don’t place it in the same pocket as keys or anything else that could scratch up against it.

Get Regular Servicing

Taking your pocket watch to be professionally inspected and serviced from time to time will keep it running properly and help prevent costly repairs. They will clean, lubricate, and adjust it as needed. They also have specialized tools to remove tarnish and bring back its original shine without causing damage to the piece.
